History
Adlers Towing is the area’s most established towing company—serving Auburn Hills, Bloomfield, Clarkston, Commerce Township, Highland, Lake Orion, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Union Lake, Walled Lake, Waterford, West Bloomfield, White Lake and more—generation after generation, for more than seventy years.
Adlers Towing was started in 1939 by Charles A. Adler. The company's first location was a small, two-pump Sinclair filling station located at 695 Baldwin Avenue in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1941, the company relocated to 1324 Baldwin Avenue, after signing with the Socony Vacuum Oil Company. Adlers also included vehicle service and a diner serving lunch until 1951.
In 1943, the first wrecker was purchased—a 1939 Ford one-ton with a Manley hand-operated boom and winch. In 1946, Adlers purchased a new 1946 Studebaker one-and-a-half-ton truck, which was the first truck available after World War II. Christened "Wrecker Number Two", this Studebaker was sent to the Ashton Wrecker Company at 1701 Lafayette in Detroit, Michigan, where it had the first extended boom ever made installed. In 1951, Adlers Towing built a new Mobil gas station with service bays at 1186 Baldwin Avenue. Adlers’ police impound yard has served the city of Pontiac since 1954 with two storage yards.
Over the years, the company has continued to purchase wreckers, such as the 1952 Jeep pick-up wrecker, the 1955 GMC Ashton wrecker, the 1960 one-ton Ashton and many more. Currently, the company operates over thirty units, including wreckers, flatbeds, semi-tractors and trailers.
Boyd Reed went to work at Adlers Towing in 1943, at the age of thirteen. Boyd bought the company from Mr. Adler in 1959, at the age of thirty. In 1982, the company was incorporated, and became Adlers Towing, Inc. Boyd's son, James Reed, who was already an employee, was taken on as a partner.
Boyd is now retired, and his son James runs the company as the President and General Manager. James’ oldest son Dustin serves as Office Manager, while his middle son Trevor drives a wrecker—thus carrying on the family tradition of Adlers’ quality service.
